Royalty improvements urged by former auditor

A review of how the province collects billions of dollars in resource revenue urges the government to shore up its royalty system and be more open with Albertans about the handling of their oil and gas riches.

Former auditor general Peter Valentine, hired by the province when it unveiled controversial royalty changes in October, delivered 13 recommendations Monday, calling for improved reporting, accountability and co-ordination within government.

He cited staffing shortages that saw some government audits of oilsands producers' costs completed four years after information was submitted.
