Woodbine trainer Reade Baker understands the sad story of Eight Belles, the filly that broke both ankles while pulling up after the Kentucky Derby and had to be euthanized.
A similar thing happened to Baker at the Woodbine track last Saturday, about an hour before the Derby. He, too, trained a horse that broke down during a race, had to be taken by van off the track and was euthanized.
Don't ask him any details about the Derby. Baker was too shook up to pay attention. And he couldn't sleep that night.
“I got lots of horses, but if that happens to any of them, it's just heartbreaking,” Baker said yesterday. “An article I read made it sound like we're just some commercial thing and we're trying to chase money. That's the furthest thing from the truth.”
