UBC mum on report art thieves used pepper spray

VANCOUVER - The University of British Columbia is refusing comment on a CBC television report that thieves who broke into the Museum of Anthropology and stole $2 million worth of gold artworks used bear spray and wore gas masks while committing their crime.

"I cannot confirm that," was all UBC spokesman Scott Macrae would say Wednesday of the report that the thieves sprayed the museum with bear spray and wore masks to protect themselves during the robbery, while the lone security guard was out having a cigarette.

CBC also reported that a number of security cameras went off-line four hours before the theft.
