CRTC to split fund to support popular shows

TORONTO - The fund created to subsidize the production of Canadian television should support more shows based on popularity alone, the CRTC said Thursday.

The report stemmed from criticism by major cable and satellite sponsors that the Canadian Television Fund spends too much money on shows with little mass appeal.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission recommended splitting the $290-million fund into two streams, one earmarked for private broadcasters and the other for the CBC and non-profit networks.
