A photo essay about Canadian war brides has earned Toronto-based photographer Arantxa Cedillo an international photography prize.
Cedillo has won the Alexandra Boulat scholarship from the Toscana Photographic Workshop in Italy. The prize, for photographers under age 35, includes a workshop in Tuscany and a chance to study with master photographers.
Cedillo photographed the war brides, the 44,000 women from throughout Europe and the Commonwealth who married Canadian servicemen and came to Canada after the Second World War.
Her photos date from 2005 when 350 war brides and their families travelled across Canada to Halifax's Pier 21 to mark the 60th anniversary of their arrival in Canada.
