Report: Lightning sign C Stamkos

The Tampa Bay Lightning didn't wait long to sign the top overall pick of the 2008 draft, according to a published report.

The Lightning on Monday signed Steven Stamkos of the Ontario Hockey League's Sarnia Sting to the standard rookie deal of three years at an $875,000 base salary and $2.85-million possible through "maximum achievable performance bonuses," according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Stamkos is the third player drafted first overall in franchise history. Tampa Bay picked defenseman Roman Hamrlik first in 1992 and selected Vincent Lecavalier with the top pick in 1998.
