Community group calls for resignation of Montreal North mayor.

MONTREAL — A new umbrella group in Montreal North is calling for the resignation of borough mayor Marcel Parent, following the death of Fredy Villanueva.

Republik Montreal North is to table a number of demands at next Wednesday's borough council meeting.

The group accused Parent of making irresponsible and insulting statements in response to the police shooting of Villanueva last weekend and the subsequent riots that followed.

Parent said that "everything is fine now" and that he would never have been able to predict the riot.

Republik also claimed the population wanted a public inquiry and has no faith in the ongoing investigation by Quebec provincial police.
