MONTREAL — With the prospect of prison in Chuck Guité's immediate future, the main bureaucrat behind the sponsorship scandal shows no desire to cut a deal and become a star Crown witness.
One of Mr. Guité's final attempts to avoid jail failed on Thursday when the Quebec Court of Appeal upheld his fraud conviction and 3½-year sentence.
Mr. Guité, in turn, dashed the hopes of investigators and prosecutors who have said privately they thought he might tell all to avoid jail time.
“Why would I play along?” Mr. Guité told The Globe and Mail. “I have nothing to play along with.”
