Tinge of regret for Mark Ramprakash

The grand plan for Surrey to gain their first win of the season was for rapid runs in the morning and then for Saqlain Mushtaq and Murtaza Hussain to spin Sussex out.

The reigning champions had other ideas, though, and 40 minutes into the day might even have had ambitions for an unlikely win themselves.

In a six-over spell four wickets fell for the addition of nine runs, three of them to the off-spin of Ollie Rayner and – crucially – Mark Ramprakash caught at mid-wicket off Robin Martin-Jenkins.
