Bangladesh frees ex-premier from detention

DHAKA, Bangladesh: Authorities say former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been released from jail in Bangladesh pending trial on corruption charges.

Prison official Shamsul Haider Siddiqi says Zia was freed Thursday, three days after the Bangladesh High Court granted her bail for a period of three months.

She had been held for one year in pretrial detention on corruption charges.

Zia was prime minister from 2001 to 2006. She was arrested Sept. 3 last year and kept at a special prison set up inside Dhaka's Parliament complex.

Several thousand supporters gathered outside the complex to greet Zia.
