Olmert resigns as Israel PM

Israel's prime minister has announced his resignation, days after the country's ruling party voted for a new leader to replace him.

Ehud Olmert told a weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday that he is stepping down, following the election of Tzipi Livni, Israel's foreign minister, as the new leader of the Kadima party.

"I have decided to end my functions as prime minister of the government of Israel," Olmert said in remarks broadcast on Israeli television.

"I hope that Tzipi Livni will succeed in forming a national government with the composition she wants... For my part, I will help her with all my strength."
