Resorts ordered to inspect lifts

The British Columbia Safety Authority will today issue a safety order requiring resorts to inspect lifts for signs of ice and water damage in connection with the rupture of a gondola tower at Whistler Blackcomb ski resort.

It's a step many operators have already taken on their own.

"We were out 10 minutes after the accident happened," Michael Ballingal, a spokesman for Big White and Silver Star ski resorts, said yesterday.

"I would suggest every maintenance team in the world have already checked all their towers."
